The Heritage Home Network Group (HHNG) is pleased to announce its third tour of uniquely historic Allegan places. In the fall of 2010 the group hosted a home tour. In spring of 2011 HHNG members organized a walking tour of downtown churches. On Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, from 10:00am – 5:00pm the HHNG has a very special treat in store for its third go-around: six downtown Allegan historic buildings will comprise a tour of “Secret Spaces”, including a glimpse of Underground Allegan, a streetscape time capsule buried after the great Allegan fire of 1884.
$10 tour tickets will be available in advance at Something Sweet, 109 Locust Street, and Baker Allegan Studios, 148 Mill District Road at the end of Water Street beginning August 26. The addresses of the six buildings on tour will be listed on the back of each ticket. The tour will start and tickets will also be for sale at the former bank building located at 155 Brady Street. Profits from ticket sales will be used to beautify downtown Allegan.
HHNG is a group of historic home and business owners in Allegan. Members of the group will serve as docents but more volunteers are needed. The tour is self-guided with a docent posted at the entry and exit of each building. Those interested in assisting with this effort should contact Nancy Ingalsbee at 673-9995.
“We are so excited to offer the community this unique opportunity to view places that have never been on display; secret spaces that appear just as they were decades ago when they were still occupied,” said organizer Deb Leverence. “Few downtown areas have the amazing wealth of historic buildings preserved like those in Allegan.”
Because this tour will involve traversing many flights of steps to view second-story and basement areas, it is not advertised as ADA accessible. No children under the age of 12 will be allowed on the tour and babies will need to be carried, as no strollers will be permitted inside the spaces on tour.
In addition to Heritage Home Network Group sponsors include Attorney Robert J. Baker, Flashes Publications, Kaechele Publications and the City of Allegan. For more information on the Secret Spaces Downtown Tour please contact Linda Clark at 269-673-7080 (days)
